Potter Minton is pleased to announce that Ron Stutes, a member with the Firm, has been elected to serve as President-Elect of the Smith County Bar Association. He will serve as President-Elect from July 2014 to June 2015 and will serve as President from July 2015 to June 2016.
Mr. Stutes is a frequent speaker at legal seminars as well as seminars for municipal board members and staff. He has spoken on litigation topics, land use, racial profiling, bankruptcy, and municipal franchises. He has spoken before groups at the State Bar of Texas, the Texas City Attorney’s Association, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Federal Bar Association, and the National College of District Attorneys. He was the Course Director for the State Bar of Texas Suing and Defending Governmental Entities course in 2012.
Mr. Stutes’ practice is focused upon providing a wide variety of counseling and litigation-related services to municipal clients. He has experience in lawsuits regarding constitutional challenges to ordinances, environmental matters, land use issues, code enforcement, utility and franchise matters, eminent domain, construction disputes, employment matters, municipal bonds, bankruptcy, federal grants, and annexations. He also represents numerous private sector clients in a wide variety of matters.
Mr. Stutes has tried lawsuits involving these issues in both state and federal courts. Mr. Stutes currently serves as City Attorney for the Cities of Palestine, Gladewater, Canton, and Coffee City. He is admitted to practice in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, and All State Courts in Texas. Mr. Stutes is affiliated with the State Bar of Texas and the City of Tyler Airport Advisory Board, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas City Attorneys Association.
The Smith County Bar Association was founded in 1933 with approximately 80 members and has grown in the past 79 years to a membership of over 400 attorneys.
